Ground Water

Each summer a girl
is sucked into the earth.
Rejoins with mother nothing
seeping out of consciousness.
Threaded through to the groundwater
a rushing stream
a cup of water.
Police comb the fields for something
they don't know what
and eventually give up dispersed
by creeping amnesia.
Friends wander off
family forget
remember on anniversaries.
Records are lost.
